Our client is a dynamic, growing consulting firm serving the boards of directors of public and private companies across Canada. Propelled by a mission to enable boards to create and protect sustainable value, and to effectively serve as strategy assets to organizations, they advise on CEO succession planning and transitions, CEO performance management, and board composition and effectiveness (including purpose, composition, culture, and processes). 

The Position 

 Manager, Board Effectiveness 

 Board Effectiveness is increasingly recognized as key to boards adding more value, an increasingly prevalent aspect of good governance in Canada. Our client’s Board Effectiveness practice is expanding as more boards continue to seek their support in navigating their most complex challenges.  Due to this growth they need to expand their team with the addition of  a driven and strategic thinking individual to help build and deliver on this momentum.  As a key team member delivering advisory services, the Manager, Board Effectiveness will contribute to business development efforts in board effectiveness, CEO succession, and CEO performance management.   

The role provides an unparalleled opportunity to work on high-stakes, high-profile projects with boards to ensure that the companies they oversee create the value expected from them.  The primary responsibility of the Manager, Board Effectiveness will be to work with the Partner and Principal to deliver high-touch advisory to their clients and to support the practice development within the firm.    

Success in this role requires you to: 

  • Deliver consulting services to Boards in the areas of Board effectiveness, CEO performance management, and CEO succession advisory.  
  • Provide holistic project leadership across a range of concurrent projects.  Lead teams of consulting practitioners, and generally act as second chair on client accounts.   
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders (e.g. team, leaders, clients) to prioritize, orchestrate action, deliver output, and report appropriately (i.e., is ‘at the centre of things’).   
  • Navigate through issues and setbacks, recognizing when to bring in support and escalate.   
  • Act as a high-touch trusted advisor to clients and build strong client relationships.  
  • Lead and facilitate meetings with clients.   
  • Oversee deliverable development with a high degree of client centricity and business judgement . 
  • Clearly frame problems and see the bigger picture; with the ability to synthesize large amounts of ambiguous information.  
  • Present and communicate in a compelling and insightful way to a Board of Directors.   
  • Be driven to contribute to business development: actively engage in marketing, prospecting, thought leadership and proposals and sales activities. 
  • Approach work with curiosity and creativity to challenge conventions, rethink methodologies, and find alternative ways to frame and solve problems. 
  • Oversee quality, and confidently deliver high-quality analysis and insights.  
  • Participate in strategic initiatives and special projects.

Qualifications 

  • Approximately 5 years of experience in management consulting or a similar field 
  • Experience working with Executive level clients (SVP+) 
  • Experience influencing people 
  • Exposure to enterprise-level strategy, practice strategy and practice building within a professional services environment 
  • Proven ability to lead and manage project teams, with a track record of delivering high-quality work. 
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and provide actionable insights 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex information clearly and persuasively 
  • Demonstrated maturity, judgment, and attention to detail 
  • A strong interest in governance and corporate decision-making processes 
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field; advanced degree or professional designation (e.g., MBA, CFA) is an asset 
  • Fluency in French is an asset
