Director of Finance and Operations

Summary

Our client, Renewal Funds, is a mission venture capital fund that invests in the early growth stage companies in two key areas: environmental innovation and sustainable consumer products. Their values centre around environmental sustainability and ensuring a safer and cleaner planet
through their investments.

Their team is growing and they are looking to add a new Director of Finance and Operations. This key role will lead the finance and operations teams with overall responsibility for all aspects of Finance, Operations, Tax, Compliance, Risk Management and Administration.

Additionally, this position can support a variety of working models including full-time, half-time/part-time or contract. About the Position:

As an accredited and experienced financial professional you’ll be the point person of all things finance and finance related (Finance, Operations, Compliance, Risk Management, Tax) working closely with their investment team and their third-party fund administrator, as well as managing internal and external relationships with the team, partners, investees, service providers and auditors.

What You’ll be Doing:
Finance / Investments

  • Lead annual audit of all the organization’s funds and work effectively with external auditors
  • Review and approve bi-annual financial statements and Investor Capital Account Statements
  • Cash management and bank account administration
  • Oversight of AP & AR
  • Tracking and quarterly reconciliations of investment activity
  • Inter-fund expense allocation
  • Oversee management of and tax filings for investment holding companies
  • Portfolio valuations

Investor Reporting

  • Oversee capital calls and investor distributions
  • Oversee semi-annual investor reporting

Tax

  • Oversee tax return preparation by third-party service providers and internal tax return review and approval
  • Managing CRA and IRS reporting obligations
  • Oversee Investor tax reporting preparation and distribution
  • Implement and oversee cross-border investment tax structuring

Regulatory and Compliance

  • Responsibility for regulatory filings and compliance program
  • Liaising with advisors and service providers to stay current on regulatory developments

Risk Management

  • Identify and manage operational risk
  • Serve on Risk Management Committee, IT & Privacy Committees
  • Maintain and implement organizational Policies & Procedures

Leadership

  • Provide leadership and support to the Operations/Office/HR team members
What You Need to Have:
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA)
  • Experience working in the financial services or investment industries (ideally VC or PE) a strong asset
  • 10+ years of relevant financial management experience
  • Passion for environmental sustainability
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Understanding of fair market valuations
  • Experience leading teams
  • Experience and proven ability to develop, upgrade or maintain internal systems and controls for operational, organizational, and financial performance
  • Detail-oriented
  • Able to identify issues and implement solutions
  • Experience designing and streamlining processes

Nice to have:

  • Previous role in the small or entrepreneurial firm would be an asset
  • Cross-border transaction or organizational experience
  • Risk management experience
