Our client is a major residential real estate development company based in the GTA.

The Position 

Senior Corporate Controller

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Senior Corporate Controller will supervise and manage the day-to-day accounting operations, oversee daily cashflow and perform financial analysis and budgeting.  The controller has five direct support staff members to handle day-to-day processing of all corporate and project-related invoices, maintenance of the general ledger, payroll, accounts receivable, cash requirements and administrative accounting functions.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Operations Oversight: Oversee the operations of the accounting department, ensuring the timely and accurate processing of accounts payable, daily cash flow, bank reconciliations, government remittances, and payroll.
  • Budget Preparation and Analysis: Prepare construction and soft cost budgets as well as corporate budgets and conduct regular analysis of variances.
  • Audit and Analysis: Perform audits and analyses on construction costs, work in progress, and other project-related expenses.
  • Sales Reporting: Prepare and analyze weekly sales reports and year-end profitability schedules.
  • Insurance: Assist in the preparation of annual insurance renewals.
  • Year-End Coordination: Coordinate and prepare year-end working paper files for external accountants.
  • Monthly Management Reports: Prepare and review monthly management reports and development costs.
  • Budget and Profitability Analysis: Present annual budgets and profitability analysis in conjunction with the Director of Finance.
  • Financial Institution Reporting: Prepare monthly reporting packages for financial institutions.
  • Account Maintenance: Maintain the chart of accounts and implement a robust system of controls over accounting transactions.
  • Stakeholder Liaison: Liaise with external banks, corporate partners, and senior management on various financial matters.
  • Special Projects: Undertake special projects as needed, providing financial expertise and input.

Experience, Skills, Knowledge and Abilities 

  • Ideally, 5+ years of experience in an accounting function in the residential building or construction industry.
  • Previous experience managing an accounting team.
  • An undergraduate degree in accounting or business administration with a CPA designation is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical, supervisory, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience utilizing Constellation Home Builder Systems accounting packages is preferred.
